The best solution is to either turn the graphics all the way down, or to get a new laptop. The graphics cards on laptops are NOT replaceable or upgradable.

Just for future reference, if you intend on doing any gaming what so ever on a laptop, make sure it has dedicated video memory/ dedicated graphics card.|||The video/graphics card is a chip set made into the mother board and not upgradable or replaceable.

My laptop (bought in 2006) runs on Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, and its plain crap. Is there anyway I can replace it for an nvidia or ati?|||unfortunately, every brand of laptop that I've known doesn't support graphics upgrades. you'd have to replace the entire motherboard to improve it, granted that there is one that would fit your laptop's chassis. Sorry.|||Check with the manufacturer web site under support.

My Dell 8100 from years ago can upgrade easily to a better GeForce graphics card.

Are there video cardsfor laptops and desktops, or universal?

I'm looking to update the video card on my laptop and im wondering if there are specific cards that can only go into desktops or only in laptops, and if so how can i tell the difference?|||Video card comes in two main types nowadays, AGP and PCI Express. Depending on motherboards, they may support either type.

Most laptops (especially portable ones) have on-board video card, meaning embedded together with the main board. High end gaming laptop (those 15" and above usually) will have independent graphic card which you may swap (the 2 types above apply as well) but it will not be that easy to remove a video card from a laptop as compared to a PC.|||Laptops dont have removable video cards to begin with. The video is incorporated on the mainboard|||ya there is different video card for the different model depend on the mother board type|||Laptops and Desktops do have different video cards. The only difference is you will be able to update the video card in your desktop while you will not be able to for your laptop as it is integrated right into the motherboard and cannot be removed.

My laptop meets all minimum and recommended requirements for the orange box except for video card and it lags.?

my laptop meets all minimum and recommended requirements for the orange box except for video card and it lags horribly. my video card is a 5.7 and the recommended is a 6.0, but my laptop meets every other recommended requirement. is there any way i can make the game not lag without buying a new $60 video card to run my $30 games? i already tried defragmenting it.|||The video card is perhaps the single most important factor in how well a game runs.

Bad news is though that you cannot upgrade the video card on a Laptop.

BTW, 5.7 and 6.0 are absolutely meaningless numbers. No body but Microsoft ever refers to their little rating system.|||Nope, the video card and the processor are two important and needed keys. So if your laptop is able to upgrade the video card, then that is what is going to be needed to be done. Sorry.

Can a video card not work cause its the wrong brand?

I ran the "can you run it" and it says my video card is not good enough even though I meet the requirements but I don't have any of the listed video cards that it says I should have. I use a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family video card and this is the only thing in my laptop that is stopping me from playing almost every single game out there.|||Brand rarely matters when it comes to those kind of test. You have a integrated video card from Intel. Some of the worst you can have.

The video card they listed are the "Recommended" ones you should buy or have, so obviously if you dont have it, they'll fail you.

Video cards?

hello,

is there a way to put a new video card in a laptop?

is that even possible?

thx|||Not in a mainstream laptop, no. However, Dell and Alienware both make laptops that can be upgraded with new graphics cards, however, you must send them back for the upgrade, you cannot take an off the shelf card and install it into them. Most of the time, even if it is a dedicated card, it is integrated into the motherboard.|||It's possible but opening a laptop and working inside one are a pain in the butt.|||Usually, no. System boards in laptops have integrated video as do most of today's desktops. However, desktops have slots to upgrade the video. In most laptops you can upgrade the hard drive, memory, and if you really want to crack one open, you can possibly replace the cpu. IMO, this is the biggest trade off when choosing a laptop over a desktop today, well, after price.|||As a rule, no....

And don't forget this...If your laptop is still under warranty, even twisting a case screw (w/ the possible exception of the RAM or HD covers) will immediately VOID your warranty!!!

And I'm pretty sure that if you get an extended warranty for your system, any work done by a NON certified tech will void that warranty, too.

Would a bad video card cause my computer to shut down when I open a game?

It just cuts of with no warning and we've narrowed it down to opening/playing Fate or connecting the internet. Our modem is not made for networking so it either has to be plugged into my laptop or our PC. It's the PC that cuts off. It is imperative that the PC be able to use the internet because we use if for business. Any ideas about video card? Something different?|||Welcome to windows.. That is what they do. Live with it or buy a mac.|||maybe your power supply is not suppling enough power, therefore less power is sent to the more important parts, and as an automatic precaution, it would shut down.|||You probably have out of date drivers. I need a video card solution for game playing on laptop.?

My on has a laptop and wants to play a game called Warhammer: Mark of Chaos. Unfortunately, his computer tells him that his video card does not meet the games minimal standards. So, I'm thinking perhaps there is a solution out there but not sure where to look. His computer is a Compaq he received two years ago from his mother bought new at that time.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you very much.|||Mark of Chaos came out pretty recently. Tell your "on" to go to "run" and type in "dxdiag". Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade a laptop's Graohics Card as they are manufactured along with the motherboard to fit in. They are custom built.

List of Laptops with changeable graphics cards?

Can someone give me a list of laptops that you can change the video cards in?

thanks|||The only brand I know which has been popular for having "changeable" graphics cards is Dell. To be more specific, only models with AXIOM or MXM cards can be upgraded. There may be other models that can be ugraded, but I wouldn't even think about risking it. Also, it's quite common that you can only upgrade a card with a "closely-related" card as well. Even then, there's a chance that it won't work.

I do not recommend that you upgrade a laptop video card, in fact I discourage it greatly. In some cases, the card may be soldered directly to the board, and in all cases the motherboard layout is designed to fit the specific card it came with. Obviously, when you mess with it, you void your laptop warranty as well.

its part of the mainboard, thats the downside of a laptop|||In most laptops, you are stuck with the video card you have. Most of them use onboard graphics. That means that the graphics card is built on to the system board. Some have dedicated cards, but finding a compatible upgrade is not exactly easy, reliable, or cost worthy.

I tried to download a program on my dell laptop, but it said i needed more space on my video card. how do i do that?|||Most likely, you have what we call "Onboard" video. The CPU is also the GPU (video card.)

You can find out by going to Start, and either hitting Run (if you're on XP) or type into the search box msconfig and enter. It'll open the Microsoft Config Utility. Go over to the Display tab and see what it says about your video card. You may have to look it up online for more detailed stats.

1: if you're asking if the graphics chip currently in your laptop is supported by your laptop, yes it is supported, a manufacturer wouldn't put non supported hardware in something that has their name on it (cough cough* I'm looking at you Asus)

2: if you're asking whether or not you can change a laptops video card, yes you can but its very risky, its like brain surgery, almost literally, and finding laptop video cards is also almost near impossible, you also have to make sure you have the right power supply and enough room and so on

3: if you're wondering why they show up differently, its because one is listing just the type of chip and the other is listing the type + the total shared vram memory it has, Intel makes onboard graphics chips so if you were wondering, it won't do you much good for gaming

Question about video cards?

I have a Inspiron 6000 (DELL) laptop and want a new video card....I play zoo tycoon and it starts running choppy when there is alot goining on...Or is there any other ideas people have to help me?|||I did a bit of research here because I was curious. The above responses are both right and wrong. Yes, there are upgrades for the laptop you have, and they are as follows:

64MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY RADEON X300 PCI Express x16

128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY RADEON X300 PCI Express x16

One is a 64MB card, and the other a 128MB card. Neither of which is a huge improvement when playing the game you mentioned. I did not include links to this upgrade because I really doubt it would help. I would take a look at how much system RAM you have. If you are not running at least 1GB, the game will never play well. If you are trying to play zoo tycoon 2 or 3, you will need a more powerful computer. I play zoo tycoon on the desktop. version 1, and I run a gig of RAM and the game slows sometimes, and I have a 256MB graphics card. It's probably not the card, just get more system RAM.

Happy gaming:)|||I'm sure it's your video card.

You only have 64MB you should get AT LEAST 128MB for that game.

You can upgrade the card. That lady is wrong. I'm gonna get you some links.

If you look, the cards, in most instances are small 64mb or 128mb and if you search a store like Newegg.com, you'll not find a stand alone replacement notebook video card...

The technology being what it is, upgrading notebook video cards is not yet in the hands of the end-user --- the video is still part of the config of the motherboard and hasn't come as far as the replaceable desktop video cards.

You dont.|||You can not. Laptop cards are part of the motherboard and can not be changed.

How much do video cards cost for laptops?

simpless!|||it’s rare to have a laptop that will accept another graphics card.

--

If you’ve a laptop which is let down by the graphics performance luckily there are a couple of possibilities which are available to us.

1.) The first and easiest of these are the driver and firmware updates, check with your graphic card manufacturers website and ensure you have the latest installed, this can make a major difference, especially if the graphics card is not using the manufactures drivers.

Tuning and tweaks, user forums within manufacturers websites can be a great place to find tips and hints on tuning you particular laptop video cards to get the most out of it.

2.) Internal graphic card upgrades

Some laptops come with standard graphics cards that can be upgraded, by upgraded I generally mean they can support a memory upgrade. Check with your laptop supplier, but it’s rare to have a laptop that will accept another graphics card.

Other Options

There comes a time when we have to look at the overall specification of the laptop, if the architecture is more than 3-4 years old no matter what is added it’s never going to be able to run the latest games or other graphic intensive applications.

3.) External graphic cards

If your computer has a docking station? Or is there one available? If so many of these can take full pc cards, many of these may only be PCI but this can still give a good graphics boost at a decent price for many laptops.|||you can't upgrade the video card for a laptop, because they are Integrated onto the mother board.

What are some good laptop video cards, i can replace my current one with?

my current card cant handle games very well in my laptop, so i was hoping to upgrade, but idk anything about lap top video cards, or if you can even replace them.|||In laptop You can not change Graphics card

This ASUS N53SV-XE1 laptop is exactly like mine. I just got this one from [...] a few month ago.

Everithing is very good except screen resolution (but I get used to it) and keyboard flexibility.

After a 3 month of use one key is working not really good. I know that I have warranty, but to send a laptop somewhere is not a good idea for me ... I will change a keyboard my self later when it will be available.

i7 Performance for this money is amazing. I add 4 gb ram more and now it is just super powerful.

Overall I am happy with this laptop.|||If you are going to get a large, high-resolution LCD display on your laptop, or you’re planning to attach an external monitor, make sure you get some good video. The standard low-end built-in graphics from Intel or chipset manufacturers will always be listed as “integrated” and will usually be the base graphics offered. Sometimes it’s just a little more costly to get better graphics, and we recommend going for the better solution.|||Sorry, not possible.

Laptop video cards are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Where can I find a seller of replacement video cards for laptops over 2 years old?

The graphics card in an older Toshiba Satellite (5105-S501) has seemed to have died. I can't find any replacement video cards for sale. The original card is an nVidia Geforce 4 440 go.

Can anyone direct me to someplace where I can find this card, a viable substitute, or any sites that may just help point me in the right direction?

Thank you.|||I am afraid you are out of luck. I dont know specifically for that laptop, but generally you can not change a video card on a laptop. Even if you can change the video card, the replacements are very rare and not too powerful.|||You cannot replace a video card in a laptop. They are not like desktops with slots for a new card.

How can I find out if my video card supports TV out?

I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV and need to know if the video card supports TV out directly through VGA port function. (I am using a vga -> analog connector) I've tried googling it and can't find it. Is there a place on my comp that it would list that? Where can I find that info?

My Video card is listed as: "mobile intel(r) 4 series express chipset family"|||i recommend to go on the intel website and then go to product and the graphic card and then laptop/mobile graphic card and then go down to series chipset family and the download the manual from the site and the specifictaion will be on there

I need help with laptop video card info?

i want a new laptop. i see 2 that i really want. the only thing is the graphic cards. one has a NVIDIA GeForce 7150M card with 799MB video memory. the other has a ATI Radeon X1200 with up to 831MB (shared) graphic memory. are these good for gaming or do they suck. if they are good wich one is better. please answer, the deals on the laptops are ending soon.|||Well, I tried researching around for the ATI card and not much came out of the AIT-AMD website, other than a benchmark tests, and those tests seemed quite low for gaming now in days. Although your best bet would have to be with nvidia. After all nvidia is heard to be best on games.

That ATI version on the laptop is pretty low end version also. Its the 690g series, which is just for the user that doesn't really do much with their computer or anything intense, although i could be wrong. The reason i would go for the nvidia is because it would be a better choice, also for a long run. Also, the ATI version has shared memory, which for my taste is pretty bad. i wanted to get info on how much does it have and there was one and had 128mb on it, very low. so again nvidia would win on memory, after all memory is pretty crucial for video cards.

So under these two, the nvidia would win, but if you really want a laptop for gaming, i would look elsewhere because maybe these laptops aren't cut for it. For example, you can probably play halo 2 on the thing with nvidia, but it would have to be played on low settings. but if price is a problem for you, then by all means get the nvidia laptop or whichever is your choice.

if you would like a good deal for gaming laptop check out this one, i was even thinking of buying it when i was cruising down best buy on the laptop section. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?…

but i always recommend making it yourself at the manufacturer's website that way its flexible on your wallet, while getting the things you want.

I use a PCI winnov card on my PC, witch makes sharing video better than USB. Are there any for laptops?

I just want to know how hard it is to intagrate a pci video card into my laptop. (such as winnov) There is software out there that allows USB camera's to share the Video streams with different applications, but it's not always compatible with some sites. However the Winnov i have on my desktop has no problem sharing, plus i like to use my camcorder when doing my live video streams.. Any idea on this or any problems that might be encountered.?

New video cards for a Notebook?

Is it possible to replace a video card for a Laptop, if so is it the same as for the desktops?|||Usually possible?: no. They are usually soldered straight onto the motherboard. Basically, you need to get a whole new motherboard for a graphic card upgrade in most cases.

When it is possible?: completely different from desktop replacement. Laptop GPUs are chips in the MXM format, not full-on cards.

---

The best thing you can do is update your video drivers. There's not much else you can do for most laptops.

Unless you've ordered the laptop with the card you wanted, you can't swap it out. Unlike Desktop graphics cards, which are limited only by available slots, Laptop graphics cards are hard to find, and even harder to replace.

Laptop GPUs are not cards at all, but GPU chips soldered into the motherboard (which is why the ones with dedicated cards are said to have "discrete graphics" and others have the built-in "integrated graphics" rather than having "cards"), so as are some of the CPUs - meaning you have to melt the metal solder to even take them out. Even then, it's not 100% that your motherboard will support the new card. This is the way most laptops today are made. You'll have to be a real expert to be able to swap them successfully - even then success isn't 100%. Manufacturers will not take them back for an upgrade.

Furthermore, your laptop motherboard chipset will not allow for you to upgrade to a discrete GPU if you ordered it with the integrated card.

Unless you have a laptop with a separate graphics unit or an MXM slot, you won't be able to upgrade/replace it. Check your manual to see if they allow any upgrades. Few laptops today allow you to do so (the Alienware line being one of the very last) I know for sure that recent Dell laptops use the soldering style.

-----------

The only option you have left is to use an Expresscard-adpated graphics unit, but not yet. Maybe in the near future; right now external graphics through Expresscard is in the process of development/release.

There aren't that many for sale yet in the U.S., but if you're lucky, you can find an ASUS XG Station for sale somewhere (but it won't be cheap considering its around $300 for the dock alone). You just need to have an Expresscard slot. They're only offering the 7900GS and 8600GT (desktop card) for the dock so far, but from the looks of the design you might fit other PCI-E x16 graphic cards into it in the future.

However, because of the slower transfer bandwith through the ExpressCard port in comparison to the PCI-E x16 GPUS usually use, they will not perform nearly as well as built-in/native cards.

http://www.hwupgrade.com/articles/print/…

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/1671/…|||As long as the motherboard in the desktop has a PCI-E slot you can put a video card in it, however with notebooks you have to make sure it has a video card in it so you can replace, but if it doesn't and uses onboard graphics I'm afraid you won't be able to replace or add one in

Example: i tried playing amneisia and it told me no video card detected -_- please help!|||You have to right click on the desktop, and go into the Catalyst Control Panel. There, you have to manually designate which games should use the Radeon card. Otherwise, there is no need to use it for surfing the net, etc.

Do you have to get a special kind of Video Card for Laptops?

I have a laptop and it has a bad video card so I was wondering if you have to get a special kind of Video Card for a Laptop?|||You can't swap out the graphics card in a laptop- they're often soldered down to the motherboard, and when they aren't, it's difficult to replace unless you have the exact same model card (sizes and electrical pinouts are not standard)

Your best bet is to have the original manufacturer replace it if you're still under warranty. Otherwise, your laptop is dead.|||While it is possible to upgrade a laptop video card it is not an easy thing to accomplish. I would recommend not even attempting to upgrade it. I would just buy a new laptop. If you really want to though this site should help.

Is it possible to ADD a video card to a laptop with a integrated one?

285 GB Memory|||well basically the higher the number, the better... BUT nvidia recently went over the 10k mark and started new at 100 and is now at 285...

but yeah the 7 series card (7000 -7900) is better. if you can run cod4, you can run a ton of games man...|||Your answer that your looking for is the highger the number is the better, except for the new 200 series which actually foes up to the GeForce295 (best card out there)

But minimum card for COD4 is about 6700? which is minimum, other games may require more handle in your card, how much memory does ur card have? 256mb? 512mb? 1G? this is video card Speed. if it is 256 then that is why some games dont handle it so well. cause of the speed.

and if you are going to want to play some of the newer games coming out i recommend go a little higher video card.

How does an external video card work on a laptop?

Does having an external video card mean that you can treat a laptop as something with greater graphical power? For example, if a laptop has a very low-end Intel video card, can an external video card compensate for it and allow the video card to play high-end games, such as Crysis or Assassin's Creed?|||Dan, depends on what you are willing to spend.

On the low end(less than $50) there are USB adapters that allow you to add monitors to laptops. They do most of their graphics processing by using your CPU, and they are kind of limited in the way of resolution. So if you are looking at playing games this would not be a good solution.

There are companies that make full featured external cards, but they can run well over $1000. Take a look at the Sidecar.

http://www.digitaltigers.com/sidecar.asp…

There is also the option to add a card slot from an external box like the Magma Expressbox.

http://www.magma.com/products/pciexpress…

I don't know what your budget is like, but in some of these cases it might just be cheaper to buy a new laptop.|||No. External Video Cards are for those that need to run an additional monitor. I have a question about processors and video cards?

i've noticed a trend in LAPTOPS that if you're going to get one with an intel core 2 duo processor (which most people say is better than AMD), the video card would most probably be a graphics accelerator from intel as well; and if you're going to get one with an AMD processor, the video card would most probably be either an ATI or nVidia video card (both of which most people say are a lot better than intel's).

here's the case: although people tell me to get an ATI or nvidia graphics card, they also tell me that core 2 duo is much better. it's a laptop im buying and i seldom see one with both items included. it's either one or the other.

im planning to get a laptop that is suited for gaming, so which combo should i get? core 2 duo + intel's graphics media accelerator or amd turion 64 x2 + ati or nvidia graphics card?

tnx in advance! ^_^|||amd turion 64 x2 + ati or nvidia graphics card

FOR GAMING!

You WILL notice a difference with the intel for doing many things like ripping dvds or unpacking large files etc etc. The amd is DOG slow when it comes to stuff like that. Also, in many regards, the intel is still a superior gaming machine even though it costs more for mhz vs mhz.

BUT, because of the limitations in video cards, if this is for gaming, then it's a no brainer as you will be miserable without a good vid card. Everything else can be lowered to keep the games running in the future such as releases that require more UMPH from the cpu.

I am a bit surprised you couldnt find a laptop with intel and a good vid card?

Have you tried looking at www.newegg.com This is the cheapest and most reliable/honest place to buy online from, with the fastest standard delivery.

Which notebooks or laptops come with Nvidia Quadro video cards?

I would like to buy a notebook for 3D modelling and animation. Video editing and compositing as well. Sager Notebooks was recommended to me, but they have Nvidia GeForce, not Quadro.|||The Dell Latitudes (business laptops) come with Quadro cards. I currently use a D820 in which I have a 512mb Quadro NVS 120 (256dedicated, 256 turbocache).

EDIT: It seems they've re-vamped their business notebook lineup. The D630 and D830s both feature quadro cards as upgrades. The Precision also offers it as an option.

Quadros are not the same as Geforce. They run on similar chipsets, but are very different. For instance, if you take a mobile Geforce card and compare it to a Quadro card based off the same chipset, the geforce will be better at games and such, while the quadro is better at 3d modeling.|||Sager doesn't sell Quadro laptops anymore because GeForce chips are nearly identical (except in drivers), much chepaer, and perform the same in almost all applications. That's something you should really look into. But if you must get a Quadro:

What kind of video cards would be compatible on a laptop?

I am having trouble finding video cards that are compatible with laptops and was wondering if anyone had any idea of what would work. I know that laptops can be upgraded with video cards so yeah....if anyone could help me out, that'd be superb|||Laptops aren't like desktops in that there is no market of video cards that you can swap around between systems.

If a laptop manufacturer decides to produce a laptop (such as a gaming oriented one) that has a scalable price tag, one of the things they'll do is produce two or three video cards that go with that, that typically just have a difference in video RAM between them. The video cards they made are specifically for that model and will not work with any other model of laptop!

However, the vast majority of laptops, some 90% don't have swappable video cards, it's all built into the motherboard and you have to deal with what you've got.

Generally, a good idea is to Google for reviews that came out when your laptop was released. Tech blogs will typically mention the different variations that were available of the model laptop they're reviewing. If they hint at multiple video card options, then go see if you can find them available somewhere.

Because the cards aren't meant for a market of their own and are only originally sold within the systems themselves, you have to find them second hand, through Ebay or laptop parts dealers.

Expect to pay way more for it than it's worth.

I use this merchant's site as a way to check for hardware options and part numbers when I'm working on a laptop: http://www.impactcomputers.com

Good luck!|||Not all laptop motherboards will take a graphics card, and the ones that can usually have one. Find out from your manufacturer if your laptop supports it. There usually has to be dedicated ventilation on one side of the PC where the card mounts otherwise it would overheat. Its not as simple as putting a video card in a desktop PC. You also have the problem of the voltage your laptop supplies to the GPU. I'd consider purchasing a gaming laptop rather than risk ruining your current one.|||Do research on your motherboard and see what it can handle. See what type of motherboard you have and just type it in on google and you will most likely find a site that has specs on it.

Can you buy video cards and install them on laptops?

If so, how do i know if a video card will fit in a laptop or not? What kind of slots do most laptops use? Thanks in advance for the help.|||unfortunatly not to my knowledge, laptops are simply not intended for such high end intense 3d processing, unless bought and customised to commit to such tasks. 'Alienware' and such brands, and popular manufacturers also consruct laptops which are specced for 3d production and design however...|||Nope, you see, the graphics in a Laptop are basically part of the mother board, and are often soldered on the the mobo.

This is done for a number of reasons, 1 being to keep people buying new laptops and not just upgrading.

another reason for this is that laptops are designed for specific hardware. So if they made it possible to let you change the graphics, and you buy a monster gfx card that producers enough heat to melt steal, thne you can blame the laptop manufacturer for not making the laptop able to handle the heat. Thus, this will force the price of the lappy up...

So, say for example, a game's recommended video card is a Nvidia GeForce 6800 256MB, would a Nvidia GeForce 9300 GS 512MB be even better? Is there a chart for this?|||Here's why just looking at the video card series numbers are bad: nVidia comes out with video cards in groups. THe first ones released are the better ones...the Geforce 9800s. The lower ones in the series are cut down versions.

The Geforce 9300 has modern technology, but it is NOT very powerful. According to the link in "Sources", the 9300 is actually much weaker than a Geforce 6800! The 9300 will be compatible (that is, the game will be able to run), but it wont run the game as well as a 6800 will.

While I get this replaced, I was wondering if I could connect my desktop to my laptop and use the video card on there and or monitor, while still primarily using my desktop. Thank you.|||I don't think it's possible. You want to use the HDD that's on your desktop, so if anything, try removing it an inserting it on another machine.

Which video/graphics card should I buy for my laptop?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR4000E laptop. It comes with a poor Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family video/graphics card which means no games, no nothing.

I have heard that it is very difficult to replace graphics cards on laptops because they are integrated into the motherboard? Quite frankly it's all Greek to me.

Are there external video cards for me that work with what hardware/plugs/etc my laptop has? Are they worth the money/trouble?|||>s very difficult to replace graphics cards on laptops because they are integrated into the motherboard?

In most cases, it's impossible. Not difficult.

This is what a graphics chip would look like inside a laptop:

http://i41.tinypic.com/a0zyoi.jpg

it's basically just a chip, soldered directly onto the PCB. You can't unsolder it and remove it, because that would essentially turn your motherboard into a heap of junk metal. Your laptop would stop working.

>Are there external video cards for me that work with what hardware/plugs/etc my laptop has?

Yes, google up "Vidock" and "DIY Vidock"

There are Youtube videos demonstrating what a DIY Vidock can do.

>Are they worth the money/trouble?

Rarely. external GPU's don't work without a dedicated power source, and they won't work well without the use of an external LCD monitor.

You might as well build your own gaming desktop. Or just buy an Xbox...|||Of course they aren't worth the trouble. it is always better to buy hardware built around the video you want. Only buy a component if buying the entire package is beyond your budget. Your model may not even be able to use an add-on video.|||I agree with the other posters. It is true that graphics chips can't be replaced.

If you want an external graphics solution, there are some that connect through USB and provide you with another monitor. These won't help with your built-in screen though, so then you need a monitor and will end up paying an arm and a leg for a poor solution. I would highly recommend a replacement laptop.

If you are trying to upgrade yours, I'm guessing it is fairly new. Consider selling it to cover some of your costs?|||Nope, sorry, can't upgrade the graphics chip on that laptop. Not happening. First of all, there's no socket on the board for a mobile nVidia or ATi chip. And second of all, it could only be done if the laptop has a discrete gpu on the board which is removable. Your laptop features none of this.|||You have a laptop, but you will NOT be upgrading the graphics. Sorry.

Laptop graphics are soldered onto the motherboard and are not replaceable. Only a very few, very expensive, high end gaming laptops have graphic cards in MXM sockets that can be upgraded.

You can buy external graphics card

Can i change my laptops video card?

i got a acer aspire 7520 with nvidia 7000m 256mb video card, but it sucks! i would like to change it with something better. last time i opened it and saw that it is like glued or something from the sides with somthing black, could i like, cut them off and then chage the video card then put some more of the black thingy|||Your video is integrated into the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Make sure you keep your drivers up to date for best performance.|||No you cannot. Learn from this, if you are a gamer, build a desktop!|||No. Video on laptops is heavily integrated into the motherboard. The entire system is build around chipsets, and mobile chipsets are not upgradeable. I don't know what you were looking at, but what you described is not a "video card."|||The answer most likely is no, I did a good search on the laptop and couldn't find much for specs along the lines of the video card. NEVER cut anything off of a computer it is most likely there to serve a very important purpose. Most laptops have onboard video cards therefore you cannot change them.|||Nope you cannot change the video card on that system If you try chopping it off you'll end up with an semi expensive brick.

You can for the interest of gaming trade your laptop for an adequate desktop capable of playing games. Or sell the laptop on ebay and buy or build a gaming machine.

And I quote:

Sub $500 dollar laptops will never be "state of the art" gaming computers.Ever Ever Ever and an added Ever for emphasis.

Is the ATI Radeon® X1900 video card for desktops only or is it found on laptops?

if not, what is the version available for laptops? thank you for your time|||Looks like it's only for desktops. Looks like the most powerful ATI video card you can get for a laptop is the Mobility Radeon HD 5870.

What all the video cards for laptops available in the market with a 512MB video memory of VRAM type?

What all the video cards for laptops available in the market with a 512MB video memory of VRAM type. Please help with a list and also please mention if that card has its own GPU.

thanks|||I don't think there are any with 512MB dedicated, however the 8600 something is turbocached, and has 256MB dedicated, and 256MB borrowed from the systems RAM. If you have 2GB in your laptop, you'll barely notice the difference.|||There aren't any for laptops, only for desktops.

How do I upgrade the MB used in my integrated video card?

I just "inherited" an old laptop from my dad, and the integrated video card only runs at 16 MB when the system had 256 MB of RAM. Now it has 512, but the integrated Radeon Mobility 7500 video card still runs at only 16 MB. How do I divert more memory to the video card?|||I'm very sorry to say,.... you don't. Even the newest laptops can't have their integrated video upgraded without the purchase of a new motherboard. Sorry bro.|||Unfortunately you cannot "divert" more memory to the video card. The RAM for the system is different for the RAM on the video card. Your best bet would be to upgrade the video card. If its even possible on the laptop. Since the card is "integrated" i don't think you would be able to upgrade on a laptop.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Question ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i curently have Intel intergated Graphics on my Laptop, that otherwise is pretty good, however the graphics in games is not so good, i was wondering if it is possible to switch my IIG out for some type of better video option. I have built desktops before, and know what im doing with those, however i haven't played around with the insides of laptops much, so if somebody could help me out i would be grateful. oh, and buying a new laptop is not a helpful suggestion, thanks|||Since your laptop has the integrated graphic there is no possible way that you can change out your video adapter.
If you know about desktops then laptops are totally different monsters with very very few replaceable parts as the only ones that can swapped out are the hard drive, cd/dvd drive, memory, and in some cases the CPU if its not soldered to the motherboard. Now in the rare cases the video card can be swapped out but that's if you can find a replacement card that isn't going to cost more then a new laptop.|||Having most experience regarding desktop PC's I can't guarantee I am correct in saying the following:
Your laptop features an Intel Core i5 processor, which features a built in graphics processor. Chances are this means there is no way possible to change the graphics chip in your laptop I'm afraid.
If I talk about this like you are a complete nutbrain then don't be offended, as I like to keep things simple :P
Basically, I don't think you can change the graphics. If you want better perfomance make sure your laptop aint filled with useless stuff and turn down settings such as windows Aero and things like that.
Hope this helps!
Conor ;D|||It's possible but not really ideal. You would have to be very skilled in taking apart and putting back together laptops. Laptops are not meant to be customized. So in a short answer...no you can't change it.|||There is a possibility but I would never recommend it. By experience I find that some (Most) remind me of working on a Swiss watch.
Is it possible to change out any video card for a laptop?
is it possible to change out a video card on a laptop.. i have herd some say no and some say it depends on what laptop. i want to know if there is any possible way to change out the video card on a sony vaio tx vgn somethingrather laptop. it is really small and i want to change the card so i can play wow.|||No, only around 5% of modern laptops have changeable graphic cards. People who buy laptops dont specify this at point of sale, as laptop already have compromised graphics (limited space, no cooling, fixed small screens), poor graphics is a given.
Any person who requires good graphics would buy a desktop computer.
Manufactures don't see the need.
You can try a ram upgrade and allocate more of your ram for your laptops graphic card. should improve your graphics.|||no. most laptops use integrated graphics chipsets, which are bound onto the motherboard of your laptop and can't be changed. only the really high-performance laptops, like ones from alien-ware or falcon northwest, use discrete graphics cards, but by that point theres no need to change out graphics cards. so really, no, you can't change the video card for a laptop|||Mostly you can't, because laptops generally have integrated graphics cards, but if you don't have an integrated graphics card, then you should be able to. My laptop's card itsn't integrated and I think I can change it:)|||Usually - no. The new card must have exact measurements and use the same slot. You don't have much flexibility with laptops. I would check with Sony tech support for list of supported video cards for the model.|||Most likely not.|||From what I've heard, no.|||No
I need to know how to get my video card to register and work- How do I do that?
How do I find if my laptop video card supporst tv output?
My laptop has the 15 pin VGA and the tv has a S-Video. I would like to connect them but am unsure about my video card supporting this. How do I find out?|||Most of the computers (PC and Lap Top) have a 15 pin VGA output for monitor. If your computer has such output then you can connect it to TV in following manner:
1. If the VGA card supports the TV output then you can connect your computer with a 'VGA To S-Video' cable available at any electronic store. For audio, you need 'Y Audio Cable' to connect your computer's earphone to your TV's audio input jacks. It is also available at all electronic stores.
2. If the VGA card does not support the TV output then you will need 'PC To TV' Converter'. The one end of the connector has a male 15 pin plug which you connect with your computer's VGA output. The ohter end of the connector has 3 types of outputs. VGA, S-Video and RCA. Because your TV has S-Video input, you can connect the TV connector to your TV with an S-Video cable. The audio connection can be done as described in 1 above.
The easiest way to find whether your VGA card supports TV output your dealer can tell if you can supply him the model of the VGA card.
Hope this will work.|||Simple, does your video card have an S-Video output?
There is your answer.
How would you connect your graphics card to your TV if they do not have an identical cable or input/output?|||Do your card have an S-Video port? If not then your card can not support it!
Sorry if my answer disappointed you!
How can I connect laptops with only VGA to my old TV with only RCA / S-Video?
Most new laptops don't have a s-video out anymore but I want hook up my parents TV to their laptop. I know there are adapters but to my understanding the video card has to support it or else theres no signal anyway? How will I know if the video card supports it by looking at the specs before my purchase?|||You need a converter box. The video card doesn't have to support it. You can use one that is VGA output to TV adapters like this one:
If you go to tigerdirect.com or microcenter.com and search for "pc to tv", you'll see several different options.
Can you upgrade a laptops video card?
The video card in my laptop will not work with vista, i want to upgrade it but im not sure if you can upgrade a laptops video card? HOW|||Usually you can't upgrade a video card in a laptop. The laptop would have to have a PCI, AGP, or PCI-E port (very rare in laptops). You'll have to fork out the money to buy a new computer with Vista.|||Yes you can, try visiting Best Buy or Circuit City or another electronics store, they can do it for you. It'll cost you though, get ready to fork some $$$ over.
Laptops that have video cards compatible with HD?
I am looking to purchase a laptop (I would like to spend no more than $400-$600). I currently have an old Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop, but it is five years old and when I upload clips from my HD camcorder, there is a delay in picture while the audio is playing. It is my understanding that I need to have a laptop with a HD compatible video card, so I am looking for suggestions. I have found it difficult to find specific specs on many of the laptops I have been looking at online... If any of you computer genius' can provide some suggestions, I would GREATLY appreciate it! :)|||>there is a delay in picture while the audio is playing. It is my understanding that I need to have a laptop with a HD compatible video card
Actually in this situation it is more important to have a fast CPU instead of a dedicated video card, since video encoding requires processor power, not GPU power.
For a $600 budget you'd be only looking at lower end Core i3 or Core i5 laptops with integrated GPU's.
e.g Acer (Core i3, 2.53ghz, 4GB RAM, 1366 x 768 resolution)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
The Core i3 has an integrated graphics processor. It is sufficiently fast enough to handle 1080p content, but it won't handle things like 3d games or complex 3d graphics.
Is it possible to put a bigger video card in a studio 15 notebook?
Dell says it is impossible. A technician came out to fix a problem and I asked him and he said if i put a bigger motherboard in it would be possible. The mother board has to be big enough to support whatever card i choose to put in. I know its possible but is the inside of the laptop big enough to hold what i want to put in. Im undecided on what model of video card I want.|||laptop video cards are soldered directly to the mother board so you cant actually just switch the video card. you would have to find a motherboard and video card combined that you like.|||It's unlikely.. Integrated GPU's are on the motherboard and it uses your RAM to help it render graphics. Dedicated cards are separate from the motherboard and have their own memory built into them. If you're lucky enough to fund a motherboard that will fit, your frame won't have the necessary openings to allow the GPU's ports to be exposed. You're better off buying a laptop that came with a dedicated GPU.
Where else can I find drivers for the video card on my toshiba laptop A130 series?
I recently bought a new laptop from Toshiba. It's the A130 series(A130-ST1311) with an ATI x200m video card. Due to some software that I needed that was not compatible with vista, I downgraded to xp pro. However, I cannot find specs or drivers for the sound card. I have a suspicion that the sound card is connected to the video card. I am also having problems with the video card. The best resolution I can get is: 1024x768 @32 bit. I found the driver installation program on the ATI website, but it doesn't work. I get an error message saying "setup cannot find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system." However, the website says the drivers are for xp pro and the exact model of the video card: ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Mobility. Just bought the laptop May 2007. Any suggestions?
Is it possible to upgrade my laptop's video card?
I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5992 and I was wondering if I would be able to upgrade the video card on my laptop so I could run newer games like Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. If not, any other options of making gaming better without upgrading the video card?
Here's the link to my laptop description: http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite/L500/L505D-S5992|||No and its not wort it , if will be a desktop you might able to do upgrade, better buy a new one. Good luck
To replace the video card on a laptop what would you have to do?
people say you cant replace the video card, but I mean its attached to something, and people build laptops so im assuming one of two things which i need confirmed or denied,
could you replace the motherboard or whatever the video card is attached to, and it would still run, or would you just really have to replace the computer itself?|||..THERE IS...NO.video card in a laptop!!..the video is built into the Motherboard!!!!!!!!!!
Can you upgrade a laptops video card?
I herd you couldn't.. so basically if you have a crappy on-board card or whatever, you can't make that any better to play higher demanding games?|||Its not always impossible, but for the most part and for the practical user it is very hard and expensive to do.|||It depends on you specific laptop. Very very few actually allow for your video card to be replaced, but the ones that do all cost upwards of $1500.|||Very few can be replaced, most are soldered on, check your documentation
What is a USB video card and can it be used with any laptop?
I have an integrated memory laptop so i cannot add memory to my laptop. But ive been hearing about a USB video card. would i be able to use this?
this is to be able to play sims 3. I think my computer will run it but probably not that well.|||A usb video card does exist, but it is not for what you want to do with it. it is for doing stuff with multiple monitors and stuff like that, not playing games.
Can you upgrade the video cards in a laptop. and how would i do it and how can i tell what card is compatible?
what would be a minimal required graphics card for running games such as WoW on my laptop|||Sorry NO you're stuck with it.|||not easily|||I think if you have MXM cards you can. If it's integrated then you can't.
http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/|||Unlikely. Usually the graphics is integrated on the mainboard.|||Since you did not bother to list the brand or model of the laptop, just how do you expect to get an answer?
Nearly ALL laptops can not be upgraded for either processor or video. These are soldered onto the motherboard, so you would have to replace the entire motherboard, $$$$, to upgrade.
In most all cases you would be better off to buy a new laptop with the correct speed and video, and then transfer your files from the old one and sell it to offset your costs.|||if you buy one of the topend custom gaming laptops you can upgrade the video. but you can get a state of the art desktop gaming machine for half what the top end custom laptop will cost. if your thinking lan party gaming just get your gaming desktop in one of the micro versions shuttle comes to mind.|||Laptops are not really designed for games. You probably have an onboard graphics chipset.
Do i need a video card for desktop computers?
I heard that some laptops are bad for gaming because they will need a video card replacement or something. Do desktop computers need video cards to play games like the sims 3 and flight simulators too?|||The $400 computer wouldn't matter. I found a Nvidia 9500 video card for a computer for like $400 and it runs most games perfectly.
You need videocard in order to get new graphics, in some cases, you need a new motherboard.|||It depends...if you buy a $400 computer, than most likely yes. Cheap computers are built for office work, not gaming.|||That depends on your motherboard....
But usually yes you do need a a Video card..
I have 2 in what they call Crossfire ( so i can play games really fast with no lag)|||Today's up to date desktops can handle alot of games on low settings without a graphics card. To play say the Sims 3 I really think a graphics card would be needed.
But you don't need to get an expensive one, there are loads of older ones out there on eBay that will work fine. As long as your not wanting the best graphics ever.
Why are newer laptop video cards unchangeable?
what makes them so unchangeable? and I don't mean the integrated video cards.|||1. never knew older graphics cards were changeable
2. they are proprietary stuff and hence not sold in stores
edit:
i would like Dana above to please clarify which dell laptop allows graphics upgrades
also, what is this slot you are referring to|||They are not cards, they are chips that reside on your motherboard.|||Good news is---you can get a upgrade on some laptops. I know I can on mine from dell. I think some will upgrade using the card slot, but most are not changable. Soldered in.
Desktops were made to be interchanged.|||the fact that they are soldered onto the motherboard. laptops have very limited power so they have to be designed around certian power hardware , and graphics cards bary greatly in power consumption , and cards are different sizes so you cant really make interchangeable ones for laptops .
What kinds of laptops have mxm video cards?
I want to get a laptop that will allow me to replace my video card, when I want to upgrade. So, what brand/model supports these?|||Hate to tell you this but mxm is basically obsolete with newer laptops due to the last nvidia cards supporting this would be 6800 or 7800s and are limited to those cards so its really no upgrading. The only time you can upgrade your laptop cards bedsides that is sometimes major gaming companies such as alienware will take in your laptop and upgrade restrained to the upgrades when you purchased it though to be honest i am not 100% sure that this is available with newer models but i know for slightly older ones it is. If i remember dells xps higher end line offers upgrades as well but once again not 100% sure|||as far as my knowledge goes there is no laptop to date in which you can replace the gpu|||if only i knew watt MXM was!!!
How much is it to replace a video card?
Does my laptop have a PCI-E? Its a Dell Inspiron 9400. Can I hook up an external video card, and if so, which models would work?
My video card is dead.....also how much would another one cost, or to get it replaced? Thank you.|||You can't. Only way to do that would be to send it into Dell|||check out
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy…|||you will need a new motherboard. They are built in. there is no room for PCII-E slots.
Is my outdated Video card really causing all these problems with my Vaio laptop?
Sometimes, while I'm gaming, my entire screen goes black and can take up to 5 minutes to load fully if it reloads at all. And lately, my laptop has made the habit to randomly shut down completely. Without warning, my Laptop shuts down and i have to reboot it. This only happens while I'm in game. My friends have told me that I need to replace and/or update my video card, but I want to make sure. What do you think?|||Open it up and blow it out with compressed air.
If it's been a couple years, everything is clogged, and your system is overheating.
Can I switch video cards from my old computer to my new one?
I have a dell 2400 with a better video card than my new laptop, is it possible to switch them?|||Sorry, No,
Each laptop's motherboards are configured differently. They don't match size at all (even for same series with newer version). Also, most laptop comes with integrated video card which can not be switched out.|||It depends on what the laptop is compatible with...
